Jodhpur SC/ST Court finds Asaram guilty of raping teenager
Self-styled godman Asaram who has been serving time in Jodhpur Central Jail for the past four-and-a half years was on Wednesday convicted by a Jodhpur Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe Court for raping a teenage girl from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The 16-year-old girl was studying in 77-year-old Asaram's ashram in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh. The girl had accused Asaram of raping her on the night of 15 August 2013 at his ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur. The godman faces minimum of 10 years in jail for the crime.

Asaram along with his aides had been charged of raping minor girl, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and sexual harassment. The judgment in the case was pronounced inside the Jodhpur Central Jail. Asaram is facing two cases of sexual assault, one in Rajasthan and another in Gujarat.

The quantum of punishment is expected to be pronounced by lunchtime today. The Jodhpur Police have imposed section 144 in the city till April 30 to prevent any untoward incident.

In the past four-and-a-half years of his prison time, the self-styled godman moved 12 bail applications which were all rejected by the trial court, Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court.

In the years following his arrest, a number of witnesses were either killed or went missing during the trial. In a bid to evade being convicted for the crime Asaram even told the court that he was impotent. A month after his arrest a potency test was conducted on Asaram which invalidated his claim.
