John Abraham: The rising star of Bollywood
Models haven't always proved to be worthwhile actors. They are mostly seen as clothes horses. But stars like John Abraham have worked tirelessly to improve their performance in the face of criticism that he has finally proved wrong.
HE HAS finally taken over from Salman Khan. A marriage website recently conducted a poll for the hottest hunk. 36-year-old John Abraham won the poll hands down. Of course, among female stars, Katrina Kaif remained firmly at number one spot. New York has proved to be a boon for both John and Katrina. John’s detractors, who cribbed that he was all body and no acting skills, can eat their hearts out. What a spectacular performance he has given. And the movie is going great guns.

Going by the track record, models don’t have much of a reputation as actors. They are often wooden and are at best clothes horses. Remember Deepak Parashar. But all that has thankfully changed, thanks to the actor stars like John who have tirelessly worked to improve their performance despite criticism. Look at how he is now reaping the benefits. In the six short years since his debut, he has come a long way. With no godfather but an abundance of critics, it was difficult to chart a clear course.

Dhoom (2004) was his second-biggest hit in which he played the role of the anti-hero Kabir. Let’s not forget Zinda (2006), which was another negative role - but what an understated yet mind-blowing performance! He stood firmly against the might of Sanjay Dutt and came away with accolades. Water (2005) and Baabul (2006) further consolidated his position as an actor and brought him both national and international acclaim. In 2006, the hunk received the Rajiv Gandhi Award for his contribution to Bollywood. In 2007, Giant International Awards awarded him for his contribution to Indian cinema.

Born Farhan Abraham in Mumbai, John has been a successful model. His dad is a Syrian Christian Malayali architect from Kerala. His mom, Phiroza Irani, is a Zoroastrian Parsi from Mumbai. He has one younger brother, Alan. He has been dating Bipasha Basu since they met on the set of Jism. Hope he ties the knot soon. John has a BA (Honours) in economics. He is an avid sportsman and football aficionado. He also holds a Master of Management Studies (MMS) degree.

He started his acting career with a media firm. Later, he worked as a media planner. In 1999, he won the Gladrags Manhunt Contest. He appeared in many advertisements and music videos. He later joined Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting lab. In 2005, he starred in the supernatural thriller Kaal and the comedy Garam Masala, both of which went on to become hits. John was certainly showing his talents in different streams.  The 2006 Rockstars Concert was a complete sell-out almost entirely due to the presence of Salman Khan and John Abraham.  The actor also met with success in Taxi No 9211 and Kabul Express. Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love (2007) was a success overseas but however failed in India. Dostana was one of the highest Bollywood grossers of 2008. It was a perfect platform for John to display his comic skills.

Luck has definitely played a big role in John’s career. He has survived the grind. He is of course the fittest actor after Salman. Now with the release of New York (2009), the picture of brawn and talent is complete and he has finally arrived. And it is about time too. John has also become a producer by co-producing 1-800-Love (2009) along with Abbas Tyrewala. The news is that Katrina too has turned producer by acquiring the rights to a French movie. Looks like both these  actors who are riding the crest of success are making identical moves.

John is the brand ambassador for Castrol Power 1, Yamaha Marque, Wrangler, Clinic All Clear, Fastrack eye gear, Samsung cell phones, Diet Pepsi and Garnier Men. He has his own fashion line. His brand JA clothes mainly features his favourite clothing jeans. He is also deeply associated with social causes. He works for PETA. He has his own organisation - Habitat for Humanity. He recently donated Rs10 lakhs to Lilavati Hospital. In January 2009, he led Indian celebrities in the Mumbai Marathon; proceeds of which went to the United Way charity.

In 2008, John became the first Indian ever to feature in the '25 Sexiest Men' list of E! News, where he was ranked the seventh sexiest man in the world. United Kingdom magazine Eastern Eye named him the "Sexiest Man In Asia" (2008). John says fitness is like a tripod stand of food, sleep and routine. He is a veggie with an occasional fish indulgence. In January 2009, he injured his leg badly while shooting for David Dhawan’s upcoming movie Hook Ya Crook. His forthcoming movies are: Aashayein, Hook Ya Crook, 2010 Film City and 1-800-Love, Chenab Gandhi and American Empire. He has appeared as himself in Luck by Chance (2009) and Tinseltown TV (2004).

He came out strongly in support of gays rights and hailed the recent Delhi High Court verdict decriminalising gay sex. Despite criticism and being overshadowed, the true John Abraham has finally emerged. Seems, no one can keep a good man down.

."36-year-old John Abraham won the poll hands down, while Salman Khan came close second." There is a contradiction in terms here. If he won 'hands down', Salman could not have come a 'close second'.
