Junk food makers team up with US Congress for inclusion of junk in school menu
Junk food makers in the United States have reportedly lobbied with the US Congress for the inclusion of junk food such as pizza and French fries back on the school lunch menu as the Obama administration had aimed at creating a healthier menu.

THE MUCH fabled American idiocy was highlighted by the US Congress as it launched several attempts to introduce junk food back on the menu for the new School Lunch Bill. The Obama administration had in the past made serious efforts to strike off junk food items such as French fried and pizzas off the menu but the latest thinking from the US Congress is that even tomato paste should be considered as vegetarian.

The final draft of the bill, which was released on Monday, took special notice of the opinion that the US Department of Agriculture had suggested earlier this year. The Agriculture Department also asked to keep a check on the use of potatoes, sodium, and recommended on the inclusion of whole grains.

On the other hand, it's not just the Congress who is vying for a place in the school menu. It is believed that junk food manufacturers have lobbied with the Congress so that their products see a place for themselves on the shelves once again. The Obama administration’s decision to blacklist them from further jeopardising the lives of the children in the long run did certainly run them out of the business.

In order to make lunch healthier, USDA spokeswoman Courtney Rowe was quoted saying by foxnews.com that while it's unfortunate that some members of Congress continue to put special interests ahead of the health of America's children, USDA remains committed to practical, science-based standards for school meals. She further added that they (USFDA) are making sure that two of the biggest problems in the school lunch program, pizza and French fries, are untouched.
