It seems that the death of Nido Tania, son of a Congress MLA from Arunachal Pradesh and parliamentary secretary in health and family welfare department, Nido Pavitra, has gone in vain. Nido was allegedly badly thrashed after racist remarks by some Delhi shopkeepers following a tiff after hate words and taunts.
Of late, the people from the north-east have been targeted in many parts of the country and being racially discriminated. They have often complained that why were being treated like outsiders. In many parts of India, people from the north-east are insulted and their self-esteem is hurt with racial remarks.
Since Nido's thrashing was an apparent racist hate crime against a student from the north-east, there was a need to highlight the value of harmony and respect for diversity. It has been often seen that hate-crime laws do not root out such crime. However, fighting racial bias, hatred and prejudice is an important governmental function as well as a societal action.
It needs to be understood that discriminating against someone because of his or her race, religious background, appearance, life style or other qualities is lawfully wrong. Also, we need to Offer support to a person who has been a victim of a bias-motivated crime to create an environment of social sensitivity.
