Justice Karnan: India's most wanted judge – might have escaped to Nepal or Bangladesh
Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan, who had been sentenced by the Supreme Court on Tuesday for contempt has gone missing.

Karnan has reportedly switched off his phone and is being chased by the police of three states. However, according to unconfirmed reports, he might have escaped to Nepal or Bangladesh.

Justice CS Karnan had been sentenced to six months of imprisonment by the apex court after being found guilty of contempt on Tuesday – a first in the history of Indian judiciary.

Barely a few hours before the SC ruling, Karnan had taken an early morning flight from Kolkata to Chennai and checked into the state guest house.

On Wednesday, the 61-year old Justice Karnan reportedly left the guest house without clearing his bills on the pretext of visiting a temple at Srikalahasti in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh.

Headed by the Chief Justice JS Khehar, the seven-judge constitution bench of the SC, while sentencing Karnan to six months of imprisonment had ordered the West Bengal police to immediately execute its order.

Following the directions of the SC, a police team went to Karnan's house in Kolkata to arrest him, only to learn that he had travelled to Chennai on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a team of police officers led by West Bengal Police DG Surajit Kar Purkayastha reached Chennai to secure Karnan's arrest. On reaching the Chennai guest house, the team did not find either Karnan or the two judges who were accompanying him. The team even travelled to Andhra Pradesh but came back empty-handed.

As per West Bengal police, they are coordinating with police teams from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to find the "missing" judge. There are "unconfirmed" reports that Karnan had left the country and taken a flight "either to Bangladesh or Nepal or Singapore from Chennai". However, the police have said that these could be mere rumours.
