JUST ONE day before the crucial and under - insurgent threat Presidential and provincial elections in Afghanistan, Taliban once again tried to disrupt the security situation in the heavily guarded central capital Kabul on Wednesday morning.

A group of militants entered a building of Pashtani Trade Bank and started firing at police in Kabul, just two kilometres away from the Presidential palace. The fight is still ongoing at 11 am local time.

Eyewitnesses said that the clash started at 6 am. People said they heard the sounds of explosions and guns firing and that the area was surrounded by security forces.

The number of casualties caused to civilians, security forces and militants has been not been clarified yet.

CID chief in Kabul, Abdul Ghafar Syedzadah said the resistance of militants was nearly over in the area and the militants were close to defeat.

Meanwhile a commander of Jalaluddin Haqqani insurgent network, Salahuddin Ayubi has claimed responsibility for the attack, adding that two police vehicles were destroyed in the incident.

Since last week; a rocket attack, two suicide attacks and the armed attack occurred in Kabul which have claimed more than 15 lives injuring over 150 persons.

Taliban militants have vowed to disrupt the elections, which came against a big increase in violence by the insurgent group ousted in 2001, in the wake of the Sept 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
