ANTON KALASHNIKOV -indeed that is a dreaded name today. It is the name of the most effective personal weapon in the closr quarter battle. The short form and the most popular brand is AK 47 rifle. Every terrorist worth his salt swears by it and wishes to own one, wishes to carry in combat to achieve the aim-kill many in one go. There are many varieties now in vogue ; AK 47, AK 56 are the most popular ones.
Ask an infantry soldier of any army of the world, what personal weapon he would like to carry in operation? The answer would be AK 47 rifle. This weapon is the most effective one in close-quarter combat. It fires many rounds in burst fire. It is easy to aim and light in weight. It can be fired from the shoulder, it can be fired from the hip, it can be fired on the walk, on the run and in any position that a human being is capable of taking.
The designing of this most preferred and most effective personal weapon did not take place in an ordnance depot or on the drawing board of a small arms industry. The Birmingham Small Arms, the British arms manufacturing industry never thought of making a jam-proof jungle warfare, anti-terrorist infantry weapon like AK 47. A terror outfit that would pay a fortune to own any number of them never projected their requirement for it.
Strange are the ways of military manufacturing of a weapon. Mikhail Kalashnikov of the Soviet Army, wounded in battle while fighting against the German Army, then invincible, was evacuated to the Military hospital back home. As he lay in bed he was a little restless thinking how effective the infantry personal weapon of the German soldiers was. He thought of designing and making a similar rifle for the Soviet infantry. He knew nothing of designing and mechanics of manufacturing. Yet he persisted with the idea of making a rapid firing and jam-proof, light to carry and easy to maintain infantry rifle.
He made many pencil sketches and himself rejected them. Many sheets of paper were thus wasted. He continued to be at it. As an injured infantry man he had nothing else to do but to pursue his dream. Persistence paid. Mikhail Kalashnikov was finally successful in achieving his aim. The result is for the world to see. The Soviet Union manufactured millions of the AK series rifles, then the East European countries followed suit and now any country that makes it makes millions of US dollars or anyother hard currency.
The Indian Jawans prefer AK 47 to the INSAS brand rifles made in India. Terrorists of all shades and hues prefer AK 47 to anyother brand. it is the most successful infantry weapon ever made in the history of armaments.
The saddest man today, however, is Mikhial Kalashnikov, the designer of AK 47 rifles. Heving reached the mature age of 90, he ponders over this magical weapon and sighs with sadness. He surmises that had he known that a rifle designed by him would be a killer of human beings on a mass scale, he would not have lent his time and energy to designing and making it. Alas! Once again it is a case of "too little and too late"and Mikhial Kalashnikov cannot do much about it but to lament.
