Kamau village fights disability: Government turns a blind eye
People of Kamau village, located in Sonia Gandhi's constituency, Rae Bareli, Block Kiro are suffering from Fluorosis, a waterborne disease. The government is least bothered and doing nothing to help the people.

KAMAU VILLAGE of Rae Bareli has a population of one thousand. The kids in the village, which falls under Sonia Gandhi’s constituency, are suffering from Fluorosis, a waterborne disease. Although born healthy, kids fall victim to this disease and become handicapped. Presence of excess of fluoride in water used by the villagers is blamed for the problem.

There are four hand pumps and two wells in the village, too less for a population of 1,000 people. Hence the villagers are forced to use the fluoridated underground water. As a result, all villagers are suffering from Fluorosis and have become either handicapped. People in this village can be seen moving around with the help of sticks. Since no assistance has been provided by the government so far, the situation has deteriorated; cases of children born handicapped have been reported in the village.

In April 2010, the government had allocated a certain amount of money to the village, but the money did not reach the villagers. In order to cover for it, government officials held several meetings in Lucknow, but nothing came of it.

Village head Mr. Vindesh Sharma is a rich man and can afford to treat his family members at hospital, but the villagers are too poor to afford health services.

According to Dr O P Verma, associated with fluorosis prevention, pointed out that the state health department was not ready to fight the disease, which requires all kind of training and medical devices. Dr. Verma also added, “on account of corruption and lack of resources we are not able to fight with fluorosis.”

Uttar Pradesh state government has failed to solve people's problems, and the so-called downtrodden and oppressed no longer feel safe in their own home. National Rural Health Mission plan has also failed completely, while Mayawati seems to be least bothered.
