DMK MP and daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, K Kanimozhi, was arrested and sent to the Tihar jail along with Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharad Kumar for laundering Rs 200 crore and transferring it to the Kalaignar TV network.

THINGS GREW from bad to worse for the first daughter of DMK, Kanimozhi, with the infamous Tihar jail being her new address along with Sharad Kumar who is a fellow stakeholder with Kanimozhi in the Kalaignar TV. Before the Delhi High Court announced its judgement, Kanimozhi told reporters standing outside that she was expecting it.

The conviction was followed by the rejection of their bail applications by the CBI Special Court. Terming the degree of offences conducted as ‘grave’, Special Judge O.P. Saini said that considering the magnitude of the crime, the nature and enormity of the allegations, the character of evidence on record, and the apprehension that witnesses may be influenced in case the accused are released on bail, I have no hesitation in holding that both applicants/accused have failed to make out a prima facie case for bail.

As the Judge pronounced his sentence and left for his chamber, Kanimozhi was flocked by party supporters and workers, even as she tried to be calm. Later on, she was escorted by a woman constable who was soon replaced by a special team of Tamil Nadu Special Police. Witnesses present said that Kanimozhi was seen chatting with the Special Police Team for about 15 minutes. She was also smiling with the team and enquired about their jobs.

In prison, Kanimozhi will have the company of alleged spy Madhuri Gupta and prostitution kingpin Sonu Panjaban. For the next few days, she will be lodged in the ward number 8 of Tihar’s female ward.
