Kanpur garners support for arrested cartoonist-activist Trivedi
In Kanpur, the supporters and family members of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi protested outside the residence of Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal. Reportedly, Jaiswal assured the protesters of providing all possible help to the arrested cartoonist.
EARLIER ON Sunday, Aseem Trivedi was arrested for allegedly posting derogatory cartoons and seditious content on his web portal, which has now been blocked.
The protestors from Kanpur and Unnao gathered outside Jaiswal's residence in Kanpur to express their outrage and demanded Trivedi's immediate release.
Trivedi was arrested in Mumbai following a complaint, allegedly by a Congress worker, that he had put up banners mocking the Indian Constitution on his portal during the
Anna Hazare rally held last year.
Aseem' father Ashok Trivedi was shocked that his 24-year-old son was arrested on charges of sedition despite being from a family of freedom fighters.
Meanwhile, Trivedi has refused to file for bail, and is being kept under judicial custody. His arrest has taken the nation by storm with the media taking up his cause in a positive way. Apparently, in one of his cartoons he had drawn, he had used the symbol of the national emblem to create a cartoon - caricaturing corruption in public life.
