THE CONGRESS has released the first list of 84 candidates for the forthcoming Karnataka assembly elections. The former deputy chief minister Siddaramaiah finds a place in the list. The list released in New Delhi last night also includes former state ministers DK Shivakumar, Roshan Baig and KJ George.

Significantly, ticket has been denied to Manchanahalli Mahadev, a staunch supporter of Siddharamaiah from Krishnarajanagar assembly constituency. That ticket has been given to former minister and a heavy weight of the party, H Viswanath.

The impression that in the backdrop of All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s visit under his ’Discover India’ mission, ticket from Heggadadevanakote assembly constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribe, would be given to a tribal has been falsified.

In fact, a senior leader of the Nayak community and former zilla panchayat member Chikkanna has been given the ticket. Here, Appanna, a close supporter of Siddharamaiah, was a strong contender for the ticket.

Out of those who quit Janata Dal – Secular (JD - S) and followed Siddharamaiah, tickets have been given to MK Somashekhar (Krishnaraja), Dr HC Mahadevappa (T Narasipura) and K Venkatesh (Periyapatna constituency).

Former union minister Sreenivasa Prasad, who joined the Congress Party after quitting JD(S), has succeeded in securing the ticket from Nanjangud. However, it has not been possible to get the ticket for his close supporter KR Mohan Kumar from Krishnaraja constituency.

R Narendra, son of G Raju Gowda, who has identified himself as a supporter of Prasad, has secured the ticket. He had contested last time also and had been defeated.

Siddharamaiah, contesting from Chamundeswari constituency so far, has been moved to Varuna, the newly-formed constituency. Ticket for contesting in the election from Chamundeswari constituency has been given to Yelwal block congress president and former member of Taluk Development Board M Satyanarayana of Gungralchathra.

Ticket has been given to State Youth Congress general secretary and son of AICC member HN Prem Kumar for contesting in the poll from Hunsur. For the first time, ticket has not been given in the Congress list to a Scheduled Caste (Yedagai) candidate. All three tickets have gone to Scheduled Caste (Balagai).

Ticket to contest from Gundlupet has been given to HS Mahadevaprasad, a supporter of former Minister MP Prakash.

Congress Party has entertained a Uppara community candidate for the reason that Veerashaivas have identified themselves with BJP. Accordingly, ticket has been given to zilla panchayat vice-president Puttaranga Setti, an activist of the party in Chamarajanagar.
