Karwa Chauth celebrations on across India
Karva Chauth celebrations are being carried out across the country on Wednesday, with married women undertaking rigorous fasts for the well being, longevity and prosperity of their husbands. The fasts would be broken after moonrise.

KARWA CHAUTH celebrations are taking place all across the country with women observing fasts for the well being, longevity and prosperity of their husbands. Even young girls, who are not married, are observing the fast with the hope of finding a soul mate of their choice.

The fast is a rigorous one, kept nine days before Diwali, with women not even consuming a drop of water from sunrise till the moon rise. An hour or two before the moonrise, women gather to offer prayers to Parvati, worshipped here as Gaur Mata. The fast is only broken after offering prayers to the moon.

Markets on Tuesday evening, October 6, were filled with women eager to get Mehandi on their hands and feet to mark the occasion. Shops selling trinkets and jewellery also did brisk business as preparations were in full swing to celebrate Karwa Chauth.

These included the ever popular bangles and cultural icons marking a wedded women like Sindur, Red Dupattas etc. Sweetmeat shops were also busy with buyers looking around for Sargi items- those foods taken prior to the fast, before the sunrise.

Not only this, gay couples are also coming out of the closet and have joined the Karwa Chauth bandwagon, with reports of many couples observing the fast for the well-being of their partners. The age-old traditions has also caught up with technology with Karwa Chauth SMSs and online greetings becoming the flavour of the the day.

A large number of websites are offering people the facility to send Karwa Chauth messages, who are increasingly lapping up the service. A Karwa chauth SMS doing the rounds today says:

Dhanya woh devi jo pati sukh hetu vrat pave
Dhanya woh pati jo devi roop patni paave
Dhanya woh swaroop jo Manushyata ka deep jalawe..
Karvachauth ki Shubhkamnaye
