Kashmir varsity Prof awarded for Hindi language

PROFESSOR ZOHRA Afzal, head of the department of Hindi, Kashmir University, has been conferred Ganga Sharan Singh Award by Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra.

The award has been given in recognition of her efforts and services, for promotion of Hindi language and literature in a non-Hindi speaking region. The award will be given by the President of India Pratibha Devi Patil at a function to be organised at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

It carries a cash award of Rs one lakh, a shawl and a certificate of appreciation and contribution.

Only four persons have been selected for the award throughout the country, of whom Professor Zohra Afzal is one. She is the senior professor in the University of Kashmir.

She has written articles for various national and international journals and has attended number of national and international conferences, which include World Hindi Conferences held in London in 1999 and in USA in 2007.

In 2007, she was awarded by Prasar Bharti for her academic and literary contributions to Hindi language. Professor Afzal has authored five books and translated an anthology of Kashmiri stories into Hindi, which was published by the National Book Trust.
