Kathy Taft was severely beaten on Saturday in a Raleigh home and sustained serious head injuries. However, Police have not said what the motive for the attack was or if it was a random crime.
Kathy Taft has been an instrumental member of the State Board of Education for 15 years and was a stalwart supporter of the 1.5 million public school students. After learning of the attack, Kathy Taft friends posted messages on Facebook about the attack and some had asked people who know Taft to send prayers for her recovery. Kathy remained steadfastly loyal in her commitment to improving educational opportunities for the students in Pitt County and throughout the state.
Raleigh Police are investigating the case of Kathy Taft as a homicide and the family has announced a $25,000 reward for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
Taft has been on the state Board of Education since 1995. She was reappointed to serve a second term until March 2011.Kathy Taft ran unsuccessfully for a state Senate seat in 2008. Her ex-husband, Tom Taft, is a former state senator from Greenville.
