Oommen Chandy, the chief minister of Kerala, has launched a website on July 1. The website will show the functioning of his office 24*7. How productive will the initiative be? Will it bring about more accountability in the state? Only time will tell.
KERALA CHIEF Minister Oommen Chandy has made himself visible to the people 24*7 through webcast from July 1st. The functioning of of the Chief Minister's chamber and the office will be telecasted live on the site www.keralacm.gov.in. Such steps can bring about more transparency in Indian politics, and ensure that state administration is held accountable via public recording of goings on in the chief minister's office.
Some of the significant features are Vision 2030 Idea box, and an option for citizen journalists to post videos directly to chief minister's Facebook page and YouTube. Press releases, cartoons, books by the chief minister, asset declaration form for ministers and officials, etc., that are put up on the website sound interesting.
Though the website has been launched to show the transparency of the chief minister's office, it disables audio. There is every probability that half-truths are projected. It is also a matter of question that how far this initiative is productive for the people. It should also be discussed whether it is necessary that chief minister's office is visible to people all the time because it is highly apparent that no under-the-table activities will be going on in the office. Though the motives are not suspicious, there is nothing much to boast about the initiative.
