"Well, not if a lead man is playing an antagonist", was my honest reply.
This is precisely the failing of ’Kidnap’ – fine Imran Khan kidnaps Minisha Lamba – but do the makers need to justify it and that too with such a flimsy reasoning.
The film tells the story of Minisha; she wants her parents, Vidya and Sanjay Dutt united (on her 18th birthday, please) after eight-long years of acrimony.
It is revealed at the onset itself that Imran is seeking revenge on Sanjay Dutt, for an act he committed in 90’s.
The point is, in such a movie the audiences should have sympathy for antagonist – however, here the audiences don’t feel anything for antagonist as the reason given by him in the opening of the 2nd half is too flimsy – infact, after knowing the reason many in the audiences lost interest in the movie.
Probably, a more solid reason – say displacement from land or something because of an industrial project, and the writers had character for it – Vikrant Raina (Sanjay Dutt) is projected as a rich capitalist – could have augmented the antagonist’s fight.
What rocks the movies
The first half, it is well structured and has enough edge of the seats moments. Part performances – Sanjay Dutt is first rate. Imran Khan is good, though he was better and more natural in Janne Tu Ya Jaane Na (JTYJN) .
What chucks the movie
The very premise rests on an unconvincing plot. Part performances – Lamba and Vidya both fail to impress. The 2nd half spirals out of control; it could have many more pulsating moments. The music has nothing to croon about.
Verdict
The film might be better than Tashan but definitely not in the league of Dhoom series. It might benefit initially owing to Imran’s success post JTYJN… but after the initial three or four days, it is gonna be a long nap for Kidnap.
