Kids not allowed to use toilets in children's park in Odisha: NHRC takes cognisance
Acting on a complaint that children are not allowed to use toilets in a children's park in Pipili town of Puri district in Odisha, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the district magistrate to file a report within six weeks.

A human rights organization, India Media Centre, had filed a petition before NHRC, complaining that in the newly set up ‘Biju Pattanaik Children Park’ children are not allowed to use the toilets built inside the park.

The park, named after former Odisha chief minister Late Biju Pattnaik has many facilities for the entertainment of children, the petitioner, who is the managing trustee of IMC, said.

He argued that it is a risk for their health as infection is a general phenomenon in open defecation. There are two toilets attached to the park office. The petitioner asked the caretaker of the park about the matter. He replied: “The toilets are meant for Babus (VIPs), not for public. There is enough space outside the park for defecation. Public are not allowed inside these toilets.”

Taking cognizance in this case, the NHRC has served notice to Puri District Magistrate seeking his response within six weeks.
