Kim Clijsters and Juan Martin del Potro have given the tennis lovers a year to remember and cherish for ever. 2009 US Open will be remembered in the history as a year that re-defined the word 'passion'.
THE YEAR 2009 will be remembered in the history as an year that re-defined the word ‘passion’. And US Open would be responsible for it. Or let’s say two people – Kim Clijsters and Juan Martin del Potro.
By beating Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3, Kim Clijsters became only the second mom to clinch a Grand Slam, the last being Evonne Goolagong at Wimbledon in 1980. The Belgian wild card entry had entered the US Open after a two year sabbatical. But on her way towards this win, she proved she still had it in her as she eliminated top seeds like Serena Williams and Venus Williams.
Even as Wozniascki tried to become the first Danish woman to win a Grand Slam singles title, Clijsters made sure the 23,000 fans sitting in the Arthur Ashe Stadium kept the final cheer for her. Never before had a curly haired, blonde, 18 month old toddler stolen the show in any Grand Slam, as she got her 18 month old daughter Jada on the court. Her win will inspire hundreds of thousands of working mothers across the world.
As the world tried digesting Clijsters win, another 21-year-old man quietly added to the surprise. Juan Martin del Potro will always be remembered as the man who defeated the Gods of tennis themselves-Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. A boy who until now was not even in the list of top seeded players suddenly emerged as the champion of US Open. In an unexpected turn of events, the Argentine stopped the Swiss from clinching his sixth straight US Open title and his 16th Grand Slam, by beating him 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. Roger Federer, 15 Grand Slam singles to his credit, the highest by any man and undoubtedly one of the best that the tennis world has ever produced, could not save himself this time around.
Just as an unknown 15th seed, Federer had dethroned four-time defending champion and seven time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras at the quarter finals of Wimbledon 2001, probably Del Potro is on his way to the same.
Surprises never cease to exist and as Kim Clijsters accurately tweeted 'The fairytale goes on'.
