THE RULING Biju Janata Dal, with 103 members in the Orissa state legislative assembly, has nominated ex-speaker, Kishore Mohanty as Rajya Sabha candidate ahead of the bye-election to be held on August 10. Mohanty, who is well-known for his Biju legacy, lost his assembly seat in Jharsuguda, in the recently concluded assembly elections.

One Rajya Sabha seat from Orissa became vacant (although only for the next three years) after Baijayanta Panda vacated his place following his election to the Lok Sabha from the Kendrapara parliamentary constituency.

According to media reports, after BJD ticket distribution in the last elections, a number of candidates felt sure that they would be in the running for the seat. Instead, Mohanty, inspite of losing the elections, got the ticket. Aspirants like Jangyeswar Babu, Narendra Swain were  waiting to be considered for the seat. Mohanty has been nominated to compete against the Congress Party in Western Orissa, where the national party posted a good performance in the last election. Mohanty had lost to a Congress candidate in the recent assembly elections.
