Kitchen gardens for a healthy harvest in Jharkhand
World Vision's Area Development programme (ADP) in Singhbhum, Jharkhand has implemented an innovative food security programme through kitchen gardens.
WORLD VISION'S Area Development programme (ADP) in Singhbhum, Jharkhand has implemented an innovative food security programme through kitchen gardens. This has improved the livelihood of the people and has provided them with nutrition through fresh vegetables. The children in these villages now have a regular supply of nutritious vegetables for a healthy childhood.

In the drought-prone area of Singhbhum in Jharkhand, the Singhbhum ADP has started a food security programme. It has promoted the concept of kitchen gardens and has helped 2900 families to set up kitchen gardens. Through these gardens, the people have been able to grow varieties of nutritious vegetables such as tomatoes, pumpkin, brinjal, lady's finger, snake gourd, radish, etc.

This programme has enabled the people to have a regular supply of green vegetables and has improved the nutritional status of the people, especially children. Not only did the families harvest enough for their own but were also able to sell the surplus and supplement their income.

The officials of the Horticulture department visited this successful programme and were highly appreciative of World Vision's work.

With support from the ADP, the people have set up the kitchen gardens by preparing the ground and erecting fences around the kitchen garden. Vegetable seeds were also provided by the ADP.

This innovative program has successfully addressed two key issues faced by the people. Firstly, it ensured food security to the poor families. It has also helped the families to supplement family income.
