Know about China rose which is not a 'true rose'
In Jaipur, a few houses, including mine, have China Rose plants and many visitors ask me about the scarlet red flower in our garden. Its botanical name is hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Latin) which is found and cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Often it is a solid red flower, but some yellow, magenta, pink and white China roses are also specially cultivated.

We had planted it since it blooms round the year. Visitors often get foxed when they are told that flower is a rose. Though it is called China Rose but it is not closely related to the true roses. The plant of China rose is either an evergreen shrub or small tree without any thorns and the flower has only five petals.

The leaves of China Rose plant are ovate shaped with an acute tip and serrated margin. Venation is unicostate reticulate with lateral stipules.

As shown in the inset pictures, stamens of the flower are partly fused into a cylinder that surrounds the style. I can be crossed and re-crossed to get new varieties and shades. It a good hobby plant that way and in some places in Asia competitions are held and new breeds are given prizes.

In the Bengal area of eastern India, the red variety of China Roses is used to worship Devi Kali. In some countries the flowers are dried and used in beverages like coffee and tea. In China, it is used as a herb for skin treatment.
