Kolkata Marathon to support underprivileged children's cancer treatment
The City of Joy, Kolkata is going to come to life with Kolkata Marathon on 5 January 2014, where the atmosphere is expected to be absolutely electric. Over 10,000 participants, from celebrities to corporate to school children, all would be participating in this marathon to support underprivileged cancer patients' treatment at Tata Medical Center.
A group of sportspersons, musicians and other celebrities will also take part in this event. India's top two long distance runners, Preeja Sridharan and Kavita Raut, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, designer Anamika Khanna, and actress Rituparna Sengupta will also participate in this mega Marathon. People from other states are also showing interest, which is a positive sign.
The race is split into five categories namely marathon, mini marathon, fun run, corporate run and school run. The marathon will comprise of a total distance of 42.195 km and will start at six am in the morning. Mini marathon is for 11 km. Fun run, corporate run and school run are all for 4.2 kms. To register in any one of the mentioned categories the participants have to submit the filled up registration form along with an entry charge of Rs. 300.
The main aim of Kolkata marathon is to promote athletics in the state and give Indian athletes a platform to showcase their talent. Previously, the winners of the Kolkata Marathon got an opportunity to participate in International marathons in cities such as New York and Bangkok. This time the Kolkata marathon is going to be an extra special affair, because 5000 runners have already pledged to demonstrate their support.
