Kolkata metro restarts its helpline for women
The Kolkata Metro railway has restarted its helpline for women, following the growing complaints of harassment and other crimes against women in metro, which dented its image last year. The two numbers which will serve as women helpline numbers are 9007041908 and 9007041789, these numbers will connect the caller to the Metro Bhawan-based central security control.

The Metro Bhawan keeps the track of train movements, and is equipped with facilities which will connect all the 24 stations instantly. As the passenger uses this service and informs the security office about her location, then the security officer will alert the stations from where the train has left and to the station towards which it is heading.

However, the helpline, which was launched in October 2012, did get very less response due to lack of publicity. But this time the metro officials are taking extra effort to publicize it. This time white sheets of paper with the number printed on them are being pasted inside the metro train. They are also planning to come up with a unique four-digit toll free number which will be easy to access.

The women metro commuters are happy with this move taken by the Kolkata metro, but they are concerned about the underground section where the mobile connectivity is not available. Metro officials spoke about this and said, there is a Global System Mobile for Railways (GSMR).

This technology was primarily meant for communication between motormen and the control office, but now the metro will enable this technology for mobile phone users inside the premises of metro, as per a report by The Telegraph.
