Kolkata steals a march: The city is first with the transgender rights, free wifi and other developments
Kolkata is no more a laid back city. Right from commencing first metro rail in the country in 1984 to now being the first state enabled the wi-fi services in (2015) Kolkata as a metro city has proven itself way ahead than any other metro city in India. "The city of joy" is expected to be under full wi-fi coverage by Bengali New Year by mid April.
In addition the Mamata Bannerjee government also became the first state government to work towards giving equal rights to the transgender community. A development board has been constituted to comprehend and attend to their problems and make their living easier along with prosperity and not only welfare. Reportedly this will help the 30,000 strong community of transgenders in West Bengal.
Another step taken by the state govt. is to use social media to connect to tribal youth. Through a recent initiative the govt is looking to gather 600 tribal youth on social media who would gather to discuss various thought and idea for the development of tribal community hooking itself with social media. "We are trying to translate the virtual friendship into real bonding so that this platform can be used to promote development and unity among the tribal members," Pradip kumar Hansda one of the organisers, told IANS.

In recent days the industrial growth and tourism of West Bengal also seems to be taking tiny steps towards improvement. The city which is often associated to with its rich culture and heritage had developed a 'laid back' tag in the last many years due to the lack of growth and industrialization. However things seem to be moving forward gradually.
While Bannerjee would need to have a check on her misogynist remarks against the alarming violence and crimes against women. As in the recent days Kolkata has been heading toward crime ranking itself to the second position after Delhi.
