Kolkata to host one-day music therapy conference
A one-day music therapy conference is going to be held in Kolkata - the City of Joy - on May 10 on the theme "Recent Trends and Advances in Music Therapy". The conference is being organized by the Thakurs Music and Movement Therapy Research Centre with the motto 'Flow with Movement, Heal with Music'.

The conference organizers have invited the music, art, health professionals, educators, therapists, communication art practitioners to the event to present their research work and experience sharing. The special focus is on the therapeutically sound application of music and dance on people with intellectual and physical disabilities as well as the technological advancement in music and application of music in neurological rehabilitation.

Music therapy is viewed as evidence based clinical application of music to improve clients' functionality, wellbeing and quality of life. Depending on the diagnosis of the client, the certified therapist designs and transacts music-inclusive intervention to affect client's various of health conditions encompassing physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual health and wellbeing.

In other words, music therapist designs and trials music-based intervention to improve client's conditions in various domains, such as motor, emotional, communication, cognitive, social, and pedagogical.

Thus, music therapy makes use both the active and receptive music experiences. The active experiences are given through adaptation, contextualization, improvisation, re-designing, composing, etc. While the receptive methods are through interaction about and discussion on music with the client, his or acquaintances, care givers to achieve treatment goals along with consulting the research literature on music therapy.

Essentially, music therapy is the non-music use of music to mitigate the health condition and enhance cognitive level of a client.
