DESPITE A let up in the rains, the flood situation in Andhra Pradesh worsened after the Krishna river breached its embankment on Tuesday, October 6, flooding several villages in Krishna, Guntur and Nalgonda districts. At least 50 people have lost their lives due to the floods in the state, which are being described as the worst in last hundred years.
Hundreds of villages were submerged after the water from the Krishna river inundated several habitations in the low lying areas and riverine islands. A large number of people have left the flood affected areas and several were rescued by boats. Authorities have also issued a warning to villages facing inundation and asked the residents to shift to safer areas.
In Nalgonda, the famous Lakshminarasimha temple at Mattapalli was partially submerged by the flood waters. In Guntur district, the Buddhist centre of Amaravathi has been cut off and about 50 villages abutting it are facing the same fate.
Meanwhile, sources claim that more than the Krishna breach, the flood problem has exacerbated due to the release of an enormous quantity of water from Nagarjuna Sagar dam and Prakasam Barrage. At least four lakh people have been rendered homeless as 400 villages have been waterlogged including a number of island villages.
A local resident said that tension prevails in the three districts as Krishna is flowing menacingly and there is no respite for the locals. The mandals, which are seriously affected include Repalle, Battibrolu, Kolluru, Duggirala, Kollippara, Tadepalli, Thulluru, Amaravathi, Bellamkonda, Dachepalli, Machavaram, Achampeta.
