Krishna water dispute resolved finally
The water settlement accord gives a great disappointment to AP where as it is a new year gift to Karnataka as per their ministers.
THE 43 year long Krishna water dispute came to a conclusion, when the tribunal which was headed by Justice Brijesh Mishra year delivered its historic judgment on 30th December 2010.

The dispute is between three states through which the river passes Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. It is regarding the allocation of water sharing of the river and has stretched for almost half a century now. In the latest verdict Andhra Pradesh has been allotted 1001 TMC of water followed by Karnataka 911 TMC and Maharashtra 666 TMC.

Although Andhra Pradesh has got the lion’s share in terms of quantity Karnataka has got the biggest advantage that is the permission to increase the height of Almatti Dam to 524 meters from 519 meters.

Andhra Pradesh is now arguing that if Almatti’s height is increased waters will not flow to AP.

But the Brijesh tribunal has not taken these into consideration and given the verdict in favour of Karnataka. The Karnataka Law minister and Water Resource Minister both hailed the verdict.

This time the tribunal has distributed the surplus waters, in that way the main advantage of AP has been thrown out. Karnataka was allotted 177 TMC against Andhra Pradesh’s 181 TMC.

Though AP has got the maximum share it will lose more water in the shape of surplus water. The verdict will affect Andhra as it is in the process of constructing four or five projects on the Krishna River which costs nearly Rs 50,000 crores. So far, no reactions have been officially received from the government but analysts say that this is a loss for Andhra Pradesh.
