KU to host annual science conference
KU held a 2 day science conference to mark the birth centenary of Homi Bhabha. 2000 Haryana school children and 30 scientists participated. The conference such a success that KU has decided to hold one annually from now on.
KURUKSHETRA UNIVERSITY is very encouraged by the success of the two-day science conference held on the university campus under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology of Haryana Government and Union Government. They have decided to organise a science conference every year for a selected 500 odd position-holding school children of Haryana who prove their mantle in science subjects.

This is an effort to encourage budding scholars to take up pure and applied science subjects for their graduation and post-graduation courses, instead of management, technological engineering and medical streams.

A decision to this effect was announced towards the end of the conference by the KU Registrar Prof. Raghuvender Tanwar after a nod from the VC Dr (retd Lt General) DDS Sandhu. The decision was also encouraged by the many proposals of financial assistance for holding quiz, debate, declamation, poster-making in science subjects by the Dept. of Science and Technology, Haryana.

The 2-day national science conference was organised in the KU to mark the birth centenary celebrations of Dr Homi Jahangir Bhabha, the great scientist of the country who worked with his contemporary celebrity-scientists like Albert Einstein, Yukawa, Wheeler, CV Raman etc. to create atomic energy for India. About 30 scientists from all nooks and corners of the country participated in the deliberations with 2000 school children of Haryana.

Speaking as the chief guest of the conference, in the absence of Prithvi Raj Chavan, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, the Haryana CM Bhupender Singh Hooda announced many packages for the promotion of science in schools, right from holding State Talent search Examination from 2010 to awarding monthly cash emoluments from Rs.500 to Rs.14, 000 for students from class IX to Ph.D.

He said Haryana Vigyan Yuva Ratan Award, carrying Rs.6lac in cash, has been instituted for budding scholars from schools. Nitin Jain of Faridabad who not only topped the IIT and AIEEE examinations but also bagged four gold medals in Olympiad has already been conferred with this award. Shobhit Goyal, who bagged bronze medal in Olympiad, got Rs.2lac in cash as award.

Delivering a key note address, Dr S Banerjee, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission said that India will become self sufficient in power generation by 2020 by producing 25,000 mw electricity with the help of indigenous resources. Dr Banerjee said India may not depend on coal or uranium energy for long for its mines of Thorium and Plutonium can help generate energy for India's needs for centuries to come. He said nuclear units in Haripur (WB), Kavvada (AP), Kadankalam (TN), Jaitpur (Maharashtra) and Mithi Virdi (Gujarat) besides Kunwaria (Haryana) and Bargi (MP) will reinforce their production to the climax in phased manner.

He said India would be capable of utilising nuclear energy for the welfare of the people in the fields of agriculture, cancer treatment, skin treatment, desalination of water and other societal needs in the days ahead.

He said Dr Homi Bhabha's dreams of making India number one in the world in the field of atomic and nuclear energy sufficiency would come true by 2020. Moreover India will be in a position to export heavy water reactors and other equipments. He emphasised the need of private partnership for steady growth of power in the country. He exhorted the students to join science streams to realise the dream of Dr Bhabha.

The 2-day science conference left the school children mesmerised with the immense potential which science has at their disposal.

Children showed keen interest in the science exhibition organised in the crush hall of the university auditorium in collaboration with the Panorama and War Science Museum, Kurukshetra. Interaction with the great scientists of the day in the conference and physical visualisation of science practicals in the exhibition left indelible impression on the majority of curious students.

Many may be enthused to apply for pure and applied science courses in the future, which is what the state government wants because of late students have been reluctant to pursue science subjects.
