Kudos to Kapil Sibal and the ilk!
The politics-criminal nexus, irrational opposition and political bickering is wrecking havoc on our democratic ethos. Yet, there are towering figures in our political corridors that feel for the public issues and deliver their best to serve the same.
THIS YEAR, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of our democratic republic. No doubt, we have been able to carry forward the legacy despite testing problems like insurgency, terrorism, internal conflicts and deadly wars with neighbouring countries.

However, the people's rule has significantly lost its sheen owing to the corrupt leaders, inimical political game plans, nasty bureaucracy and self seeking ministers.
This has further led to public indifference and the depleting spirit to participate in the governance as revealed by the less than 60% voter turn out ratio. The politics- criminal nexus, irrational opposition and political bickering is wrecking havoc on our democratic ethos. Nevertheless, one can not deny that there are still towering figures in our political corridors that feel for the public issues and deliver their best to serve the same.

Presently, our HRD Kapil Sibal Minister is doing a commendable job of renovating our archaic education system. He has kept political interests at bay and is sincerely working for the young generation's future. His first year of the present term is yet to finish and he has already addressed concerns like the making tenth standard board exam optional, uniform core curriculum across the country, setting age 4 as minimum age for admission to schools and is on with a single entrance exam by 2013.

He candidly revealed in one of his interviews that he was awed by the stress his kids were put through, when they were in school and hence he vowed to correct the system whenever he got a chance. The party leadership gave him one and he is just making the best use of his position and power. Indeed, these ministers have huge resources and constitutional support to do a lot for the public welfare and ensure their betterment, but unfortunately lack the intention. Wish his
predecessors would have realized the same, and we would not have the number one position in students' suicide rate. He would be definitely remembered as education's renovator by our progeny.

Our Prime minister is a live epitome of clean conduct and is an astute advocate of honest governance. The humble leader fascinates both the youth and elderly equally for his nation oriented thinking. Our Home Minister, P Chidambram, is also revisiting our security polices and is persistently engaged in taking individual states along with the centre to tighten the safety measures. Though, there are lapses due to lack of coordination, ineffective intelligence and delayed response, one can hope to plug these as we have a willful minister at the helm.

Mani Shankar Aiyer deserves the credit for contributing his bit in strengthening the rural governance at grass roots level during his tenure as Panchayati Raj Minister. Our Environment Minister is also doing good work on ground for sustaining the fragile ecosystem. While Lalu Prasad Yadav's railway turnaround is still under the scanner, our former speaker Somnath Chaterjee is another figure for general people to measure up with. He resolutely upheld every virtue of free democracy during his tenure and the 24 hour Lok Sabha channel would always speak of his indomitable stature.

Lastly, but never the least, everyone's beloved Abdul Kalam was never a political man, but his above board attitude redefined India's highest office. Though we miss the valuable leadership of public spirited leaders like Atal BIhari Vajapyee, Late Jyoti Basu, Late Rajiv Gandhi and of course Late Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the forthcoming faces such as Rahul Gandhi and the like, optimistically hold the lamp to pave the way for rejuvenated politics in India.

Hence the layman, media and other civil society groups should appreciate the positive initiatives of certain right thinking people and encourage them through requisite support. Instead of creating hype of divisive and unruly politics, good news should also make the headlines. Also, the youth should come forward and join the stream of governance for setting the course right in real terms. Long live our democracy!
