La Nina may result in longer winter, may last till March
It may be very rare but India might witness one of the longest winters in its history, as it might stretch to March 2012, which is actually the starting of the summer season. All these weather changes have been attributed to La Nina, an atmospheric condition, which takes place when there is a fall in temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.

A JOURNALIST by profession, Shrabani Mukherjee, has been waking up late in the morning now-a-days, as she finds it very difficult to get out from her comfort zone inside her quilt. “All of a sudden, it has become very cold”, she adds with a shivering tone while waiting for an auto. She might find it difficult to make her office on time, which starts at 9 in the morning, as La Niña, a ocean-atmospheric phenomenon, which has been affecting the US primarily has also been one of the reasons why India has been witnessing colder winters, than normal.

La Nina is a condition, which takes place when there is a dip in the temperatures in the Pacific Ocean (South) area. The cold weather might last till March, according to weather experts, reported The Times of India. "Some dynamical climate models are showing a link between La Nina and below-normal temperatures in India in the next two months," said D S Pai, director of the long-range forecasting division of the Indian Meteorological Department in Pune, reported the paper.

This type of weather conditions might not take place very regularly, especially cases like winters lasting till match, which is hard to digest. Basically in India, it would be the start of the summer season, where temperatures would be reaching around 30 degrees on an average. Does this imply we will see people wearing their woollens during the month of March too? Seems weird to even think about it. But then La Nina is a freakish phenomenon and so one never knows the weather in March could turn out to be pleasant rather than warm.

Hence, the cold weather in the areas around Himalayas and some other parts of the country can be attributed to La Nina. Places like Shimla have been witnessing heavy snow fall.
