Language shortcuts - lol, omg, cya, fyi - destroying English language
Slangs such as Lol, cya, gtg, btw, and omg among others are being used world over in conversations, mostly between students. Disturbed that this trend might affect their employability skills, Sheffield's Springs Academy in UK has decided not to allow students to use this language, instead use Standard English. Should India also follow the same policy?

LOL, CYA, gtg, btw, lmao, rofl, omg are slangs that are being widely used by youths across the world in their day to day conversations. They have inherited this form of language from social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and mobile text messages, where these slangs are used to curtail character count. Making sure that their pupils have all the employability skills, teachers at Sheffield's Springs Academy in UK have introduced a policy to encourage students to use Standard English, reported The Telegraph.

The situation in India is also the same, where such kind of language is being used. Is it time that the Indian schools and universities also follow the same policy followed by Sheffield's Springs Academy? An Assistant Professor from Darjeeling, Mandira Ghissing while speaking to merinews.com said: “During our times, we did not have huge scope of entertainment, so we used to read a lot and hence never used such slangs. The youth of today are so much involved with Facebook and networking sites that these languages are used regularly”. It is time to check upon these languages. A day might come when people would consider these languages to be correct instead of the proper one.” “Who will correct them, then? She asked.

Another Assistant Professor from VIPS, Delhi, Rachita Kauldhar, said, “It would be beneficial if slang languages are not allowed to be used In India as well. Students need to show a sense of discipline towards the institution too”. Though she herself uses this language while chatting with her friends, she never used it while writing her assignments or exams. But when she goes through the writings of her students, she says, “Students commit these mistakes, as they write‘d’ instead of the, ‘u’ for you in answer sheets”.

The lady Professor from Darjeeling, though, does not completely agree with the stance taken by Sheffield's Springs Academy, ‘as it cannot be imposed on them’, she further added, “The English Language is constantly evolving”. With a sense of balancing her views, she puts it very appropriately, “The students even if they use slangs should be able to understand the difference between the correct language and slang”.
