DEMANDING AN immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka, M Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) supremo, started an indefinite fast from Monday morning (April 27).

Karunanidhi visited the memorial of CN Annadurai, his political mentor and paid homage to the famous leader of Tamil Nadu. Terming the Lankan armed forces killing of the Tamils as ‘state sponsored terrorism’, Karunanidhi said, “This is my sacrifice for the Tamil cause. Let me be another victim of Rajapaksa’s (Lanka president) genocide.”

The DMK chief further stated that he did not want others to join the fast. After listening to this incident, DMK leaders have started coming to Karunanidhi’s residence to visit their political guru. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi and his grand nephew Kalanidhi Maran also have come to see him.

While speaking to the media, Karunanidhi said, “I have decided to offer my life to the increasing numbers of lives lost due to the Sinhalese regime's continuing cruel acts against the Tamil ethnic minority in the war in Sri Lanka.”

The LTTE rebels demanded an unilateral truce on Sunday night. Karunanidhi stayed awake the whole night and looked into the television channels and radio stations just to hear good news. As the Lankan government did not pay heed to the request of the Tamils, Karunandihi decided to dedicate his life for the well being of his Tamil brothers.

The LTTE rebels wanted the truce after the Lankan army captured the strategic Vlayarmadam area and encircled the remaining 6 sq km strip of land where Prabhakaran and his top aides are believed to be hidden.

The violation of the international humanitarian laws has reached to the peak in Sri Lanka, the LTTE claimed. J Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK general secretary also declared that only a separate 'Eelam' homeland was the only solution for the decade old ethnic conflict in the island nation.

Karunanidhi also urged the Indian government to break all political and official relations with the Lankan government if the Rajapaksa government continues to kill Tamils in the name of curbing terrorism there. He had also sent a telegram to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee regarding this issue.

Karunanidhi also refused to label Prabhakaran as a ‘terrorist’ and said that Prabhakaran’s goals are right but his methods are wrong.
