IN A bid to overrun the last part of the LTTE-held territory, the Sri Lankan armed forces captured the strategic Vlayarmadam area on Sunday (April 26).

The Lankan armed forces encircled the 6 sq km strip of land, which is believed to be the possible hideout of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran and his top commanders.

While speaking to the media, the Lankan defence ministry said, “Sri Lankan soldiers have liberated Valayarmadam area and so far rescued 500 civilians held hostage by LTTE from there.”

The Lankan commandoes and special task force units, backed by the 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry and 12 Gemunu Watch units entered into Valayarmadam area last night. It is located at a distance of 6 kms away from Vellamullivaikkal, the last remaining hideout of LTTE rebels.

The Lankan armed forces put up the Lankan national flag in the area today morning and announced that the area is secured. The Lankan army also recovered the birth certificate, horoscope and albums of Prabhakaran and his son Charles Antony from the battle zone.

The 53 division of the Lankan army ransacked the area after operation and unearthed these documents. The birth certificates of Prabhakaran and Antony are now kept for public view.

Prabhakaran, the 54-year-old rebel head had reportedly buried these documents before he fled from his residence in Pudukudiyiruppu east. B Nadesan, the political head of LTTE denied the charges that their group was forcibly recruiting children to fight against the Lankan government.
