Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar will be honoured as the first recipient of the 'Swarbhaskar' award, instituted in memory of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
MELODY QUEEN Lata Mangeshkar will be honoured as the first recipient of the 'Swarbhaskar' award, instituted in memory of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Renowned Kathak dancer Sitara Devi will present the award to Lata Mangeshkar on Saturday, February 12 during a function in Pune. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi passed away at the age of 89 years on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Pune's Sahyandri Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Pune city Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal said at a press conference that the Pune Municipal Corporation will be presenting the first 'Swarbhaskar' award to Lata Mangeshkar. The Swarbhaskar award includes cash of Rs 100,000, a trophy and a certificate. Mohansingh Rajpal also said Lata didi has agreed to accept the award.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has organised a three day long cultural festival from Thursday February 10. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's son Shriniwas Joshi, Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Pandit Brij Narayan, Upendra Bhat and others will perform during the cultural festival.
Over a six and a half decades long career, Lata Mangeshkar has recorded songs for over a thousand Bollywood movies and also given her voice in over thirty-six regional Indian languages and foreign languages. Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar has won several awards including the country's second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan in 1999 and the biggest award for the contribution in Indian cinema, Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1989.
