Such mega-budgeted ‘royal’ marriages by ministers in centre and in states are not uncommon including one by Union Civil Aviation Minister Prafulla Patel some years ago. Only some time ago, Chief Minister of Delhi Shiela Dixit rightly asked her ministers to avoid attending mega-budgeted marriage-ceremonies.Even religious-bodies like Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee had also induced austerity in marriages by allowing just one simple vegetarian meal because the Committee had rightly analysed that increasing expenses in marriages of girls is major cause of aborting female-foeticide.
It is time that Union government should take measures to ensure marriages to be simple so that birth of girl may be taken as boon rather than bane. India should follow Pakistan by allowing only soft drinks and beverages in marriage-related functions. Political consensus should be developed so that welcome initiative of Shiela Dixit may be nationally adopted to compel elected representatives to boycott mega-budgeted functions. Apart from declaring assets and wealth, senior bureaucrats, legislators (including Parliamentarians and ministers) and Judges should also put their one-time personal expenses exceeding say rupees fifty thousand on websites of their respective authorities.
.The root cause of the issue is like this: India is over dependent on domestic consumption except for the Information
Technology sector, where exports are doing good. When we talk of domestic consumption, food is at the top. Many entrepreneurs
have become rich and millionaire by entering the trade of food business. Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness on a large
scale, many people are suffering from diabetes courtesy the flourishing of 'NOT SO NUTRITIOUS' sweet meat shops; i keep hearing
that on many big spending marriages there are about 20 - 40 sweet items starting from jalebi, rasgoolla, gulab jamun,
ras malai, kaju barfi, gajar halwa, (Haldiram, Chappan Bhog and others similarly placed are good at inventing newer and newer sweet
dish almost every moth) etc. etc. On savoury items, again there are 20-40 items starting from puri, chola, naan, paratha, plain
roti, samosa etc. etc. Again on soft drinks there are always, coke, fanta, limca, seven up, fruit juices. Deserts are always
there at such places!!! Howsoever, hard one may resist the temptation, given the situation, invites guests end up eating eating beyond
limits. Beneficiaries are the local caterers who making millions of bucks within two to seven years period, mainly through
networking of contacts. This is the picture not only for North India but also for East, West and Southern part of India.
It is time Health Minister do come out with a white paper on how best to avoid the wastage and impress upon such big spenders
on eatables to provide some form of donations, with cash and kind, to food bank on a continuing and regular basis, so that
those who cannot afford two square meals a day can benefit out of this. The writer deserves special praise for bringing such
vital issue before the society. More ideas are welcome on such wastage of money!!!!!
