Lawyers across the country will observe a 'Black Day' on February 27, to protest against the police lathi charge in the premises of Madras High Court on February 19. The Bar Associations of the country will protest in a peaceful and democratic manner
TO PROTEST against the police lathi charge in the premises of Madras High Court on February 19, lawyers across the country will observe a ’Black Day’ on February 27. Bar Council of India took this decision and condemned the police action, in which several lawyers including a judge was injured.
Bar Council of India in a message, asked the legal fraternity to observe Black Day on February 27, terming it as an attack on the judicial system of the country. It also asked the Bar Associations of the country to decide the mode of protest in a peaceful and democratic manner.
He said the state bar councils, High Court Bar Associations and District Bar Associations can decide the mode, in which the protest is to be observed in a peaceful and democratic manner. The Council will also send a delegation to Chennai to enquire about the incident in detail. It has also asked for a probe by a retired judge of a High Court or Supreme Court to look into the details of the matter.
As a token of solidarity and amount of Rs 1 lakh will also be offered to the Tamil Nadu Bar Council to help the lawyers, who have sustained injuries in the incident.
