Leaders greet the nation on Buddha Purnima
The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, the Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari, and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh have greeted the nation on the occasion of Buddha Purnima, which is being observed on May 25.

Extending his greetings and good wishes to the citizens of the country, Mukherjee stated in his message relesed to the press, "Lord Buddha’s teachings of non-violence, love and compassion are of eternal significance. He taught us the path of Right Action so that mankind may overcome its suffering. We must strive to make these teachings part of our daily life and tread the path of nobility in thought, word and deed. May this joyous festival of Buddha Purnima usher in peace and universal brotherhood across the world.”

Reminding people the relevance of Buddha’s teachings of compassion, selfless service, right conduct and non-violence, Asnsari stated, “On this important occasion, let us imbibe Buddha’s message and dedicate ourselves towards building a peaceful, compassionate and harmonious society,” reported The Times of India.

In his message, Singh said that the teachings of Lord Buddha inspire us to follow the path of universal brotherhood, compassion and the service of the underprivileged and disadvantaged people. "May this festival spread the values of peace and brotherhood amongst us all," he stated.

Here is a famous saying of Guatum Buddha apt for the occasion: “What is evil? Killing is evil, lying is evil, slandering is evil, abuse is evil, gossip is evil, envy is evil, hatred is evil, to cling to false doctrine is evil; all these things are evil. And what is the root of evil? Desire is the root of evil, illusion is the root of evil.”
