Learn to make simplest pookalam design outline this Onam
On the first day of Onam festivities of ten days in Kerala, the auspicious flower floor rangoli is done at the entrances of houses and temples to begin the festival auspiciously. The flower floor rangoli is a religious art done during Onam and is called pookalam.

Pookalam was known for simplicity with inclusion of a Hindu religious symbol into it. Often, Swastika symbol was drawn and space around was decorated with pinched flower petals. However, ever since competitions in pookalam creation are being organised, religious art has shifted towards expressive art with grandeur and glamour attached to it.

Here is the stepwise illustration of making an auspicious design of Onam pookalam.

1.       Draw a square on the floor and at its centre draw a Swastika Hindu symbol as shown. Mark the mid-points of the limbs of the Swastika.

2.        Extend a limb of the Swastika and bend it at right angles twice to join the line to midpoint of next limb.

3.       Repeat the activity with the other three limbs successively.

4.       Draw four circles, each near the corners of the outer square. The pooklam design is ready for decoration.

5.       Put small flowers along the lines of the design.

6.       Fill the sections enclosed by lines with pinched flower petals and light a lamp at the centre of the completed pooklam.

As a religious symbol for the Hindus, the Swastika has been mentioned in the Vedas. It symbolises auspiciousness, connotes stability and growth, represents the Sun dispelling darkness, as well as works as an emblem of Ganesha. It is meant to decorate everything for use for the first time or begin any event or ceremony.
