Legendary actor Manorama, dies at 78
Veteran actor Manorama, affectionately called 'Aachi', died of multiple organ failure on Saturday. The actor, comedian and singer acted in over 1200 Tamil films with top stars like MGR and Shivaji Ganeshan with a brilliant career spanning over six decades.

Manorama also holds a Guinness World record for acting in more than 1000 films. She also holds a unique distinction of having acted in plays and films with five Chief Ministers. She played female lead in the play directed and acted by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai.

She acted in films with M Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran and Jayalalitha who later went on to became chief ministers of Tamil Nadu. She also acted with NT Rama Rao, who went to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

The versatile actor who was affectionately called Aachi, began her career as a stage artist and acted in several hundreds of dramas. She then migrated from dramas to the silver screen in 1958, with the Tamil film 'Maalayitta Mangai' in which she was the female lead.

Though her major contributions were in the Tamil film industry, she also essayed roles in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films.

She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002 and won the National Film Award for best supporting actress in 1989.

As the news of her demise spread, condolences began to pour into social networking sites. Actor Khushbu and Radhika Sharathkumar were among the first to tweet.

Khushbu Tweeted, "A sad day in the history of Tamil cinema. One of the greatest actor, Manorama fondly known as Aachi is no more with us….a legend has left us. A vacuum will remain forever…..Nobody can ever replace her."

While Radhika  Sharthkumar's tweet showed the shock she experienced, "What a great loss Manorama aachi passed away. RIP to a great person. So many memories, time shared, great laughs spoke to her yesterday. Thoughts running across my head, so shocked."
