On the last day of Sawan month (this year on August 8), Rajasthani women specially wear lehariya sarees in vibrant and bold colours to celebrate rainy season or sawan with high spirits. The word 'Lehar' in Hindi means waves of water and cool air.
IN RAJASTHAN, the last day of Sawan month was celebrated on Monday with religious fervour at Shiv temples and as Lehariya Utsav in which women receive the gifts of Lehariya sarees and suites.
Women in Rajasthan wearing Lehariya sarees and suites were seen enjoying swings and other social events. The sarees worn on the occasion were made by dyeing the suitable fabric in stripes of two or more colours in way to give Lehariya Utsav a rainbow like look.
With greenery and trees getting new bloom in the wet weather people become full of energy to get involved in festive activities.

The leharia garments the fabric used is georgette or chiffon and at times decorated with gota patti work,kundan,sequins,meena work,etc.
On the occasion of Lehariya Utsav there is aroma all around of a very special sweet item called “Ghewar" Women folk buy and enjoth this delicious thick round of porous sweet.
Utsav cultural significance to celebrate the feminine spirit of creation and nurturance spirit of India.
The festival has been commercialized by the hotel industry by offering recipes and flavors of Rajasthani cuisine like Dal Bati Churma, Bejar ki Roti and Missi Roti, Govind Gatta, Bajra ki Kichdi with Lahsun Chutney along with Ghewar and Jalebi as desserts.
