Lesser flow of gifts leads to better Diwali this time
It has now become synonymous with Diwali, gifting your near and dear ones, but in this process we often pass on gifts which are highly unsuitable and wont be of any use to the recipient.
IT WAS a relief when there was much less exchange of gifts this Diwali as compared to earlier years on the same festival. The tradition of exchanging gifts on festivals, especially Diwali started some time back have now become a forced tradition for commoners finding it hard to travel to far-away places for giving gifts on Diwali getting stuck at roads choked with traffic.
 
Otherwise also people find it hard to spend too much money on Diwali gifts which at most times fill households with unwanted items.
 
It has now become synonymous with Diwali, gifting your near and dear ones, but in this process we often buy and pass on gifts which are highly unsuitable and wont be of any use to the recipient.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam on his retirement-eve had also rightly criticized gifts by quoting from Hindu code in ‘Manusmriti’ that gifts coming with a purpose cause persons losing their personality greatly.

 
 
Nowadays, Diwali gifts have become a tool to bribe rather than exchanging pleasantries. Babus openly ask for their Diwali gifts in lieu of the promises of ‘files to be moved’!
 
 
Government should at least impose a complete ban on giving/taking gifts in government offices. As maybe by this step the message will reach to the people that to wish someone a happy diwali and share joys of the festival you don’t need to exchange mindless gifts that are only a formality.
