Let the security of people at political rallies be responsibility of concerned party
The recent stampede at the Bahujan Samaj Party Chief Mayawati's rally in Uttar Pradesh, on the eve of founder Kanshi Ram's 10th death anniversary at Lucknow, killed three persons and injured 28. The stampede has raised number of questions over organising the political rallies.

The incident took place when the people rushed towards the dais to meet BSP leader Mayawati and perhaps this has happened for the first time at the political rally.

Earlier also, there had been stampeded like situations in Lucknow at the time of Saree celebration function when number of women were killed and apart from this, there are number of examples when the school children have become unconscious at official rallies to welcome the senior leader, while standing in the scorching heat.

It is very unfortunate that none of the political leaders have learned a lesson from such occurrences. In fact, no precautionary measures have been taken in the stampede like situation and the entire responsibility is passed on to the local administration.

There are reports that a few people coming down the stairs at one of the two gates lost balance and fell on each other resulting to stampede at the BSP rally. Rumours of a live wire power line having snapped triggered the stampede is also there beside death of women due to humidity and heat.

In 2002, at least 12 BSP workers were killed and 22 injured at the Charbagh Railway station after the party's rally in Lucknow.

It has become a fashion and show of strength at the rallies of any political party to be attended by a national level leader and local leaders try to gather the maximum gathering by arranging buses, trucks.

There are also proofs of arranging the gathering on payment and no one can object for arranging the supporters but there is a definitely a need to make arrangements for safety measures at such rallies according to the expected gathering.

The entire arrangements cannot be left to the local administration. When the party leaders start making campaign for arranging rally, they should not forget to make appropriate arrangements for the safety of the people attending in thousands and cannot be absolved of the responsibility of any untoward incident.

Frankly speaking, organising the rallies by a particular party, is a show of strength to the other party and immediately at the close of the function, the leaders and workers left the people at their own mercy and exactly this happened in the rally of Mayawati.

In case the political parties are held responsible for any incident in the rally, then there are chances of putting a check on stampede like situation.
