Life is based on judgement and estimation. As soon as we gain consciousness of this world, we start making judgements and estimations on which our whole life depends. A child or for that matter even an adult judges the speed of the bicycle or for that matter of any other vehicle while crossing the road and crosses the road safely only if his estimation that he would be able to cross the road before the bicycle or other vehicle is able to come near him is correct based on his judgement of the speed of the bicycle or the vehicle.
When a man is driving a vehicle including a bicycle, he estimates the speed of the vehicle, etc. running before him and increases his speed based on that estimation to cross the other vehicle safely. In this case, he also makes a judgement about the distance available to him to cross the vehicle running ahead of him on the road. His safety depends on his judgement and estimation.
A vegetable or a fruit seller buys only that much vegetable or fruit from the wholesaler which in his judgement, he can sell to his customers during the whole day. In fact, every shopkeeper, businessman or industrialist buys or manufactures only that much goods which in his judgement he can store or sell without making a loss.
When in Government service, I used to make budget estimates of my division and have them passed by the concerned Joint Secretary before passing onto the Finance Division who consolidated the estimates carefully vetting it in view of their expertise and had it sent to the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Finance present the budget estimates of all the Ministries to the Parliament for approval along with the tax proposals which also were based on estimation.
So, my point is that we live by making judgements and estimations in all aspects of life and succeed only if our estimations are correct. We select our friends, our life partner and our customers also on the basis of our judgement of their character so as to ensure that they would stay with us when we need friendship in hard times and they would pay back our loans when we require money or they would lend us money when required. We succeed in life only if we make good selections in this regard.
Finally, we are a democracy and choose our leaders on the basis of our judgement of the policies of the parties which they represent or the personal qualities of these leaders. In this regard, in my view, we have never been able to make good judgement. That is why our nation has failed.
