'Life-skills based education can reduce suicide rate among students'
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed on 10 September every year to create awareness and actions to prevent suicides. This year it is being observed with the theme, 'Suicide Prevention across the Globe: Strengthening Protective Factors and Instilling Hope'.

SUICIDE, AN act of killing oneself, most often occurs as a result of extreme depression, hopelessness or other mental agony. Sociologists and psychologists consider suicide as a tragic event with strong emotional repercussions for its survivors, kith and kin, friends and extended family members of the victim.

At the global level, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health have collaborated to host WSPD this year.

According to WHO, one third of worldwide suicides are committed by taking pesticides, especially organophosphate-based pesticides that are banned by international conventions but still made in and are exported by some Asian countries. WHO further reports an increase in pesticide suicides in other Asian countries as well as Central and South America.

Psychologists say that suicide has a number of complex and inter-related and underlying contributing factors leading to the feelings of mental agony and hopelessness.

Some educational experts recommend the ' life-skills based education' can be helpful in reducing the suicide rate among students. Coping skills training as a part of education and counseling facilities are important intervention to curb the suicidal tendencies.

It is important to remember that talking to someone about your worries is always worthwhile and counselors are such people. “Although it can be very anxiety-provoking to talk to someone about your concerns, it is so important to do so. You may be the only one who says anything, or the only one who even notices all of the warning signs. Expressing your worry may make all of the difference," informs the counseling service of Wesleyan University.
