THE DECISION of Union Sports Minister MS Gill to restrict tenure of heads of sports-bodies maximum to twelve years is a step in right direction at a time when many politicians are running these sports-bodies with heavy budgets for years like their family-shops. But the need of the hour is to altogether abolish the role of politicians in sports-bodies, where there are politician-heads, who might not have participated in the sports for which they are chairpersons!
Being in legislature is in itself a very responsible task which requires full time attention of elected representatives towards their constituencies and voters. Hence no Parliamentarian and state-legislator (including ministers) should be allowed to hold any post elsewhere in any private body including in sports-bodies, because they are public-servants paid from exchequers to represent their respective constituencies and voters. All sports-bodies including BCCI and IPL should have effective government-control so that they may be answerable as public-authorities under RTI Act for their working and budgets.
