FOR THE first time in 74 years Nobel Prize was not handed over to the recipient or his or her relative. Therefore, the Nobel Peace Prize award was placed on the awardee's empty chair. The imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo was given a standing ovation at the award ceremony Friday (December 10) night in Oslo.
China described the award to Liu Xiaobo as as a political farce and an attack on its legal system. Chinese authorities have placed his wife and other close relatives too under house arrest to prevent anyone to receive the award on his behalf.
Some 1,000 guests, including ambassadors, royalty and other VIPs sat solemnly in the City Hall applauding occasionally during the speeches.
Liu Xiaobo as received an unusual standing ovation at the award function. Norwegian Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjorn Jagland said, "He has not done anything wrong. He must be released."
There has been worldwide condemnation against the Chinese move to prevent Liu from accepting the award.
As the history of the award goes, the last time a Nobel Peace Prize was not handed out was in 1936, when Adolf Hitler prevented German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky from accepting his award.
