RAFAEL BENITEZ was hopeful of a victory. His dream came true at the end of the match. Liverpool routed Everton 2-0 at the Goodison Park on Saturday (September 27). Both teams were seemingly aggressive to win the match, but David Moyes boys could not cope with the planned attacks of the Benitez’s squad.
The first half was goalless. Though some brilliant shots were made by Fernando Torres, Tim Howard, the Everton goalie was good enough to save all of those. In the 26th minute, Everton’s Joleon Lescott hit a fierce shot, but somehow Jose Reina, the Liverpool goalie stopped it. Again, Fellaini hit a powerful shot, but the same was blocked by Jamie Carragher on the line.
From the beginning of the second half, there was a tough tussle between the two squads. The spectators enjoyed the excitement till the last. It was Arbeloa (Liverpool player), who just robbed Mikel Arteta, the defensive midfielder of Everton too easily on the touchline and passed a quick cross to Riera and Alonso, thereby releasing Keane on the left. The Irish striker after getting the ball, brilliantly made a cross to the far post. Torres, the Spaniard made a spectacular volley and scored the first goal for Liverpool in the 58th minute. He kept Tim Howard standing still.
Again in the 62nd minute, Keane stopped Jagielka, the Everton striker in his track and sent a beautiful cross to Torres. The Spaniard, who was lurking in front of the goal box, sent the same into the top corner of the box and put Liverpool ahead by two goals. Everton’s Neville, Fellaini and Yakubu faced yellow cards at different times throughout the match. Moyes withdrew Hibbert in the 63rd minute and placed the French striker, Louis Saha, but he too failed to score for Everton till the last.
A jolt hit Everton when Tim Cahill left the ground, after being slapped with the red card for his tackle on Xavi Alonso. The Liverpool trio -- Arbeloa, Alonso and Torres also got yellow cards for aggression at different times. Fabio Aurelio was placed as a substitute for Riera in the 66th minute as Benitez found that there was a need of a more defensive options on the left of midfield. Benitez also replaced Alonso and Keane with Lucas and Pennant when there were only four minutes left from the end.
