Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called an emergency meeting after his government came under fire over Sugarcane pricing both in the parliament and on the streets. Opposition MPs today forced the house to be adjourned over the issue.
PRIME MINISTER Manomhan Singh on Thursday called an emergency meeting with senior cabinet colleagues on the protests by farmers in Delhi as well as opposition members in the parliament over sugarcane pricing.
Home minister P Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar discussed the matter in detail with the Prime Minister at the helm.
However, nothing was revealed about what transpired at the meeting and it was decided that decision will put before the cabinet in the evening. The cabinet meeting is scheduled to take place in the evening. Earlier, the winter session of the parliament commenced on a noisy note with opposition members entering the well of the House demanding the withdrawal of the Sugar Pricing Order. Opposition MPs lead by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav entered the well of the House shouting slogans, forcing Speaker Meira Kumar to adjourn the House. All opposition MPs including BJP, CPI-M joined the Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal of Ajit Singh in the protest against the government decision. Opposition MPs are demanding that government set aside the price of Rs 129.85 per quintal for Sugarcane. Sugarcane farmers are demanding minimum supports price of Rs 220 per quintal.
