London Olympic Committee will not drop Dow Chemical as sponsors
With the London Olympic Games, just a few months away, LOCOG has decided not to drop Dow chemicals, as their sponsor, even after Meredith Alexander, member of the sustainability commission, London 2012 resigned.

ONE OF the sponsors for the London Olympics, 2012, Dow Chemical, has come into the limelight since the past few months. There are many who do not want Dow as the sponsor for the games, for its role in the world’s worst industrial disaster at Bhopal. The situation looked serious when a senior member of the sustainability commission, London 2012, Meredith Alexander resigned.

Irrespective of the resignation, London 2012 chief executive, Paul Deighton, is in no mood to drop Dow Chemicals from the list of its sponsors. He said, "It is absolutely her right to resign. She is one of 12 members of that sustainability commission who signed off on the way we approached awarding the wrap to Dow. I think that it is great that we have got this independent function to oversee so all this is washed through transparently. I think that is fine but we are moving on,” reported The Times of India. People in India have been protesting against the sponsorship in a big way by burning effigies too.

The Olympic committee has been very firm on their decision not to drop Dow as their sponsors, as it would primarily be sponsoring the wrap that is to envelope the Olympic stadium, with an estimated around £7 million, reported The Telegraph. But it would be difficult for the London Olympic Committee to cancel their sponsorship, as it could be a huge task to find their replacement, as they have to undergo official procedures.

The Olympic Games, is just a few months away, as it is scheduled to start from 27 July to 12 August. It is expected to be a successful one but they need to stay away from controversies such as Dow Chemicals, which can bring a bad name to the games.
