London witnesses hundreds of garba events during Navaratri festival
In London, garba dances took place at many locations during nine-day Navratri festival, informed a Facebook friend Chandani Chadda with photographs.

Though, in India, the garba dances have been commercialised, but in London, it was more of a community affair and cultural education.

The non-resident Gujratis are becoming instrumental in collectivising all Indians settled in the UK for Navratri celebrations with garba dance events. It can be noted that in India, garba dances have got distorted to even become the 'rain dance garbas' and revealers' indulgence with media celebs for glamour.

However, in the UK, the places for garba events are decorated with traditional buntings as is evident in the inset picture. The tunes and songs used for such events have the folk and devotional slant in London.

At many places in the UK, garba dances and Navratri festivities are a weekend affair. However, at Brent borough of London which has a sizable number of Gujratis and other people of Indian origins, the festivities go on for all the ten days of the festival.

It was nice to know that at Brent borough, traditional garba is performed to understand the cultural roots and pass on to children. In London, around 200 such events were organised till Sharad Purnima making Navratri a fortnight affair.
